He was born on January 6, 1883, in the northern Lebanese town of Beshri, and grew up poor when he was a member of the Ottoman Empire of Mount Lebanon. He was a Lebanese poet, writer, and painter. He died in New York April 10, 1931 with tuberculosis. He is also known as Khalil Gibran, a descendent of Joseph Gibran Maronite Beshalani. He immigrated with his mother to America in 1895 where he studied art and began his literary career. He was famous in the Western world for his book "The Prophet" which was published in 1923. Gibran was also known as the best-selling poet after Shakespeare and Lausi.
